Hey - Here at Diff.Side we think it’s great what you are doing with Friend of Mine - Can you tell us more about it ? Yeah sure, it’s a non-profitable charity that’s mainly focused on mental health support and suicide prevention. A helpline service is also available, Free phone number 0800 644 1388.
What made you want to start it up?
Well to be completely transparent I was sick of losing friends due to suicide or seeing on a daily basis that the statics rise with no resolution. It came out of frustration.
How has lockdown effected you mentally?
Personally it was a blessing in disguise which birthed this charity, made me pull my socks up and get the confidence to do something I’ve had planned for many moons. It helped me focus more than anything. I got to really connect with my children but I know I was lucky in that aspect.
Have you seen in a difference in people after contacting them?
I’d like to think so, but it’s not a stop and start situation. For the majority It’s everyday, sometimes every moment. I’d like to think I bring a different perspective and a new energy to someone. Maybe help think of it from another angle.
Do you only talk to friends - or is it an open book for everyone ?
It’s open to everyone over the age of 18. It’s been crazy the age range, really eye opening. The aim is to encourage everyone to express themselves emotionally, normalise it.
Do you think there is enough services who cater to help people who suffer with mental health issues ?
Oh plenty and I’m sure they all do great work to help. The problem is more of knowing about it and being aware of what’s available, which I think is the obstacle. From personal experience I found it such a hardship to speak to someone in a time of need without it feeling intrusive or jumping through hoops.
Have you thought about expanding friend of mine - maybe online talks/sessions ?
If enough people are interested then sure but it’s not something I’ve ever pushed because a lot of people I speak to don’t feel confident enough to get on camera or be open around larger groups so I respect that, it was something that was planned but took a backseat to the helpline.
Is there anything else you would like to say to our viewers ?
Just a huge thank you to everyone that calls and everyone that has submitted videos or anyone that shares the posts. I fully appreciate it. It’s easy to help each-other it really is. Call a friend/family and tell them you love them or give a compliment or just let them know they can confide in you. It’s time now to just be open and honest with everyone, including yourself. Be happy and be safe.
